United Performance Metals’ La Mirada, California location is focused on providing high quality bar, plate, and sheet products, as well as FIRSTCUT+® Processing Services. This facility primarily works with stainless steel, nickel, and titanium alloys and is home to a shear and four bar saw machines that achieve precise sizing and clean cuts.
Shearing: UPM’s La Mirada shearing equipment has the ability to achieve customers’ most exact sizing, square and flatness requirements. Shearing is the process of cutting sheet metal to size out of a larger roll or flat stock. As the material moves through the shear machine, cutting blades come together in order to fracture the material into separate, smaller pieces. This process creates quality clean cuts that can be repeated quickly. The cut is cleaner than other methods like torch cutting, and there is no burning or melting of the primary material and no loss of material overall. Shear machines can cut small lengths at a time and have large output in a short timeframe. This can be advantageous when a large volume of simple shapes is desired. Bar Saw Cutting: The La Mirada facility has four bar saws in house that provide precise and tight tolerance. These saws spin two large wheels that continuously move a flexible, toothed metal band blade in one direction. The cutting occurs where the blade passes through the machine’s worktable. This type of saw allows for complex shapes and curves. UPM is able to cut as low as +/-.030 and process up to 36" diameter. Learn more about UPM's bar saw cutting process by clicking here.
