United Performance Metals’ Chicago, Illinois, location specializes in plate and bar products, which are primarily used in the aerospace and medical industries. On-site, the location is home to water jets, bar saws, and plate saws that provide exceptional cutting services. Additionally, this location has recently installed a new 7.5-ton crane and has re-racked material to meet the evolving needs of customer demand.
Water Jet Cutting: UPM’s Chicago facility has three water jets on site. These water jets use a high-pressure stream of water combined with a granular additive to form a coherent jet of abrasive water moving at very high speeds. This continuous flow of abrasive water erodes a narrow line in stock material, cutting it to exacting measurements. These water jets can cut a maximum thickness of 8” and a maximum sheet size of 60” x 120”. Water jet cutting allows for streamlined manufacturing by reducing scrap and providing product that is ready to weld, form, and bend. Sawing: With four bar saws and three plate saws on site, UPM’s Chicago, Illinois, facility can process and provide clean, accurate cuts to customer-required tolerances. These machines have cutting tolerances as low as +/- 0.030, as well as cutting diameters as large as 36”. Plate saws have the ability to cut material 72” wide by 144” long and 6” thick. UPM’s saw machines offer a less abrasive option and are capable of cutting solid blocks and panels out of different materials, including nickel, titanium, cobalt, alloy steel, and stainless steel.
