United Performance Metals’ headquarters in Hamilton, Ohio, mainly stores coil, sheet, strip, and near net shapes and is certified AS9100D with ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485, GT193, PWA LCS, PWA 119, and NADCAP. This facility is home to several processing services, including cut to length, shearing, slitting, and edging. This site is also home to UPM’s Laser facility, which has laser cutting and deburring capabilities.
Cut to Length: UPM’s cut to length machine, often referred to as CTL, helps create flat, rectangular blanks by uncoiling larger material, straightening and flattening it, and then cutting it to the required length as it moves through the line. This method increases flatness tolerance and material stability and is designed for surface-critical applications. Learn more about UPM's CTL process by clicking here.
Shearing: Shearing is the process of cutting sheet metal to size out of a larger roll or flat stock. As the material moves through the shear machine, cutting blades come together to fracture the material into separate, smaller pieces. This process creates quality clean cuts that can be repeated quickly. Learn more about UPM's shearing process by clicking here.
Slitting: Slitting is the process of cutting wide coils into narrower widths. During the slitting process, the larger width coils are cut into a number of narrower widths as the main coil moves through the slitter. Once cut, each of the finished widths is then recoiled to produce several finished, thin coils. UPM has three slitters, including the 18” Light Gauge with slitting capabilities of .005 to .35, the 18” Turret Head with slitting capabilities of .020 to .125, and the 50” with slitting capabilities of .015 to .125. Edging: In many cases, slit metal strips require edge conditioning before moving on to the next step of the production process. These metal strips are rolled to smooth the edges and remove burs. Our in-house edging capabilities include a #1 round, #5 partial, or full square skived edge. 2R and 3R groove inserts and traverse wound coils are also available upon customer request. Laser Cutting: United Performance Metals’ laser facility has both CO2 and Fiber laser cutting solutions. The CO2 laser is able to streamline manufacturing processes by creating products that are reading to weld, form, or bend. Additionally, UPM has 8kw and 6kw fiber lasers that ensure tight tolerances, superior finish quality, and efficiency. The fiber lasers have non-clamping, leading-edge technology that allows for better sheet utilization, as well as quick set-up times. Learn more about UPM's laser cutting process by clicking here.
Deburring: Deburring refers to the process of smoothing rough edges of cut metal parts. Once a laser job is complete, parts can be finished in UPM’s Timesaver® high-production deburring machine. This machine further removes small burrs and imperfections, resulting in high quality, finished parts. Learn more about UPM's deburring process by clicking here.
