Bring Your Work Home…And Eat On It Every Night

Ben Stansel, our Business Analyst here at United Performance Metals, recently moved from the suburbs of Loveland, Ohio to Northside, a Cincinnati neighborhood near the beautiful Spring Grove Cemetery. With this move, some construction and remodeling in his new residence was part of the plan.  Ben had one project in mind that would end up utilizing his employment at a metals company to his advantage.

Ben and his wife, Anne, purchased a cabinet with the detail and shape that would lend itself perfectly as a kitchen island in their new home.  With that decision made, they were still in need of materials to build a countertop.  After considering a few options, Ben decided the industrial look of stainless steel went well with the atmosphere of his apartment and would create a durable and attractive countertop.

321 Stainless Steel Finds a New Home

After discussing the project with his co-workers, Ben was able to find the metal he needed right here at UPM at a very reasonable price.  Settling on grade 321, .020” gauge stainless steel, Ben located scrap material in a 40” by 80” size.  He then took this piece to a local fabricator to be bent and welded, backed it with plywood and mounted it to his cabinet.  Leftover scrap metal was used to make open shelves between the island cabinetry.

Just as he predicted, the finished island and countertop is a showpiece in Ben and Anne’s apartment.  It goes to show, there’s a lot you can do with a little help from United Performance Metals.
