420 Stainless Steel Plate - AMS 5506


Type 420 is high carbon, martensitic stainless steel.  This material provides full corrosion resistance only in a hardened condition.  Grade 420 has the highest hardness among all the stainless steel grades with 12% chromium.  It can also be hardened through heat treatment.  In this instance, the material is heated to a minimum of 1472° F then quenched and cooled.  Under harneded conditions, 420 steels are resistant to mild acids and alkalis and good resistance against food, making them an ideal fit for cutlery and dental equipment.

420 is magnetic in both the annealed and hardened conditions.  It is ideal for a more polished finish and is often used in dental and surgical instruments. Many of these instruments can last from 15-30 years.  AISI 420 material is also used in automotive trim and exhaust systems, hot water tanks, and heat exchane tubing, ornamental home designs and electrical appliances.
