History of Ferguson Metals

In 1965 at age 19, H. Wayne Ferguson began working as the mail clerk for Eastern Stainless Steel Co., Baltimore, MD. "I delivered mail to offices all over the plant. In doing so, I saw how things were run." Wayne recalled. After working as a mail clerk, Wayne became a sales trainee and then a salesman at Eastern Stainless Steel. Wayne's next job, in 1971, was as Midwest branch manager for Advanced Alloys Inc., Hauppage, NY. "I saw what I was able to accomplish for someone else and thought it would be great to do that for myself. During those years I set aside money every payday so that one day I would be able to start my own company." said Wayne. Seventeen years after the beginning of his career, Wayne decided to start his own company, "In 1982, I decided to start my own Company. Five other people came with me. I had three children, so it was important to succeed." said Wayne.

In November 1982, at the height of the great steel depression, H. Wayne Ferguson became president of his own specialty metals firm, Aerospace Alloys. Critics said the business would run out with Ferguson's credit line. But Ferguson has succeeded by finding market niches.

H. Wayne Ferguson started the company with 5 employees in a 5,000 square ft. warehouse. Today we have 78 employees and 68,000 square ft in Ohio plus an office and warehouse in Connecticut. Since the beginning, the focus has been on providing a comprehensive inventory of specialty stainless steels and high temperature alloys. This focus quickly made us "the source" for specialty stainless. On January 1, 2000, the name was changed from Aerospace Alloys to Ferguson Metals to allow for diversification into new markets. In 1982, when Aerospace Alloys, Inc. was incorporated, our primary business market was aerospace. Today we supply the medical, automotive, chemical, petrochemical, electrical and many other industries.
